April is Organ Donation Awareness Month

Every year in April, BC Transplant focuses its efforts on raising awareness for organ donation.
We dedicate this time to sharing stories and raising awareness about the benefits of organ donation and the life-saving effects of transplantation. We invite all British Columbians to have conversations about organ donation, register as an organ donor, and participate in our 2020 campaign.

Logan Boulet, a 21-year old hockey player, did not survive the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash that killed 16 people in 2018. Logan registered as an organ donor just weeks before the accident and had spoken to his father about his wishes a year before. Logan was able to save or help improve six people's lives through his organ donation.

As news spread of Logan's selfless act, thousands across the country and world were inspired to register as organ donors. This became known as the "Logan Boulet Effect". To mark the day Logan Boulet became an organ donor, the Boulet family launched Green Shirt Day on April 7 of every year.

For more information and access to resources, please visit our Green Shirt Day page.

The "Live Life. Pass It On" Scholarships for the 2020 school year have been canceled, due to the current COVID-19 situation in the province and the announcement of BC school closures for an indefinite period. We will work to provide scholarship opportunities for Grade 12 students in the 2020-21 school year.

In light of COVID-19 this year, we will not be running our #48in48 campaign in April 2020. We look forward to continuing this campaign in 2021.

Join the conversation by using the hashtag #48in48 and sharing your wishes about organ donation with your family. The goal? To reach 4,800 organ donor registrations in 48 hours!

On April 7, watch as cities across the province transform into a sea of green in support for organ and tissue donation. Catch the view at the following locations and share your photos on social media using the hashtag #LightUpGreen.

How you can help

Request a mini-campaign kit and raise awareness in your community or school. You can also take a look at our Workplace Campaign Toolkit to find out how you can hold a registration drive in your workplace.

Send a message or an email to your circle of family and friends -- here is a sample you can use.

Tell them it just takes two minutes to register as an organ donor.

Over coffee, at dinner, on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). Let's make organ donation a normal part of conversation!

Thank you to our sponsors!
